Lateral testing in education brings new waste protocols
Schools must prepare for new waste disposal responsibilities ready for the roll-out of the lateral testing process, advises facilities services provider phs Group.
New mass testing is being introduced across education designed to rapidly identify and contain asymptomatic cases of COVID-19. Settings are being provided with test kits and PPE for the testing of all staff, all secondary school-age pupils and students aged 19 to 25 with education, health and care (EHC) plans. But the scheme is set to produce thousands of used tests each day across the country which cannot be disposed of within standard waste streams. As the lateral flow tests are classed as a non-hazardous chemical waste, they must be segregated and incinerated.
Jangro launches new antiviral range to tackle coronavirus
Jangro, the UK and Ireland’s largest network of independent janitorial suppliers, has recently expanded its ‘Professional’ range with the launch of three antiviral products, in an effort to help organisations keep their facilities clean, healthy, and COVID secure. Joining the line-up is an Antiviral Disinfectant, an Antiviral Hand Wash, and an Antiviral Fogger, all of which have been tested and proven to be effective against coronavirus.
phs acquires OCS Compliance
Leading compliance and facilities management provider phs Compliance has acquired OCS Compliance, part of the OCS UK Group. As part of the deal, phs Compliance will become the preferred supplier of compliance services to OCS Group.
OCS Compliance delivers a range of electrical and environmental compliance services to several hundred customers across multiple sectors in the UK. Their services include portable appliance testing, fixed electrical testing and inspection, and thermal imaging and emergency lighting maintenance.
BESA launches free heat pump training
The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) is launching the industry’s only online training course for heat pump installation to help fill a skills gap highlighted by the government’s flagship Green Homes Grant voucher scheme.
BESA is developing the installer training in collaboration with the Home Builders Federation (HBF) and heating equipment manufacturer Worcester Bosch. It will be delivered through the Association’s online training Academy and goes live in March.
To kickstart the scheme 700 free places are being offered to qualified plumbing and heating engineers looking to upskill and carry out heat pump work. They should sign up here now as demand is expected to be high and there will be a charge for the training from May.

Exceptional Conformance to CHSA Accreditation Schemes in 2020
The coronavirus pandemic did not stop the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) auditing members, giving buyers of cleaning and hygiene products the certainty that ‘what’s on the box is what’s in the box’. During 2020, a total of 146 audits took place, equaling the number of audits conducted in 2019. Members across all the Schemes achieved compliance of 93% or more.
Air quality key to making consumers feel safer
Improving air quality in the fight against COVID-19 could give businesses the edge over their competitors and attract more customers, according to a top UK university scientist.
Writing in a new report for facilities services provider phs Group, Cambridge University Professor Paul Linden highlights the growing evidence for the airborne transmission of coronavirus and that tackling indoor air quality must be at the forefront of creating COVID-safe environments.
Something young people can rely on – the CHSA’s 2021 Undergraduate Bursary
Young people may not yet be certain of the detail of what’s replacing A’ Levels this summer but there is one thing they can rely on – the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association’s (CHSA) Bursary.
“Young people are living in an uncertain world,” said David Garcia, Vice President and Treasurer of the CHSA and the driving force behind the Association’s Bursary programme. “The past 12 months have been incredibly challenging for them, with continual changes to their schooling. We know there will be no A’ Levels but we still don’t know the detail of what will take their place. In the midst of this uncertainty, young people can depend on our Bursary. Our commitment to supporting talented young people remains unwavering.”

A pair of Union Industries’ Bulldoors installed at pharmaceutical company Pharmaron UK 21-years-ago are living up to their reputation as the ‘doors that last a lifetime’.
Leeds-based Union Industries manufactured, supplied, and installed the doors before the millennium at the 473,000 ft2 facility, which handles fully integrated, end-to-end, high quality services in active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), the chemicals which form the active ingredients in medication, drug product development and manufacturing.
