Structura UK
Curtain walling by Structura UK Ltd was specified for the £32m development and rebuilding of Teddington School on its existing site for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
The new 2/3-storey, purpose-built complex was designed by BDP and boasts two new teaching blocks, dining and media area, workshop and art block, and sports hall to provide this 1,200-pupil, co-educational comprehensive with a spacious, modern, safe teaching and learning environment.
Working as a sub-contractor to international consultancy and construction company Mace, Structura UK designed, manufactured, supplied and installed a range of high performance, aluminium Schüco FW50+ curtain walling screens, incorporating Schüco ADS65 entrance and fire exit doors, finished in a powder coated dark grey (RAL 7016).
The glazing consists of an inner pane of 6mm clear, toughened and heat soak tested glass with Low ‘E’ Soft Coat to Face 3, a 16mm silver spacer, Argon-filled cavity, and a 6.4mm clear, laminated outer pane.
Specified by the architects to allow the maximum amount of light into the building’s central area, the curtain walling neatly and cleanly fills the space between the elevations while meeting stringent thermal and acoustic properties.
Other features by Structura UK include the clerestorey curtain walling, and the manual and automatic doors to the school’s main entrance.
Part of Structura UK’s £1.1m contract included supplying and installing over 100 Velfac outward opening, composite aluminium and timber windows – and door screens – with solar control glass to some of the classrooms. The low maintenance windows consist of an external aluminium profile to match the curtain walling, and an internal structural frame of laminated pinewood.

STEINEL (UK)
Since 1959, Steinel has developed innovative lighting technologies to reduce energy use. Steinel invented the Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor light in 1987 and has since sold over twenty two million sensor products worldwide. Its range of sensor-controlled lighting allows organisations to literally forget all about their lighting needs, driving down maintenance and energy costs.
Steinel continues to be at the forefront of lighting sensor technology, and recently launched its range of cutting-edge ultrasonic presence sensors, which use sound waves to detect even the smallest of movements. The range includes products for 360° reach within offices and other large spaces; sensors suitable for short and long corridors; and products that combine ultrasonic technology with passive infrared technology.
Steinel’s extensive range of lighting products includes:
The RS LED A1, a high frequency indoor LED sensor light ideal for corridors, hallways, stairwells and bathrooms.
The SensorLight RS PRO LED B1, a high-frequency sensor controlled indooremergency light, ideal when there’s a need to meet requirements for decentralised emergency lighting in conformity with standards.
The sensor-controlled downlighter RS PRO DL LED
ENERGY SAVINGS CALCULATION
Steinel can also help organisations measure the exact amount of energy being wasted and calculate savings using PROLog and PROLog software. PROLog records user behaviour as well as the level of light in a room and takes this as the basis for calculating the energy / lighting that is being wasted.
